South central and southeastern Colorado has many, many opportunities for recreational tourism. From dinosaur tracks to extreme sports, there is something for everyone here. Salida’s Brand, “Headwaters of Adventure” reflects the scenery and location of what people think of when they think of Colorado. Many lakes in the region offer fishing, waterfowl hunting, boating, and water sports opportunities year around.The Arkansas River runs through the District and offers some of the best fly fishing and white water rafting in the world.
Ancient pictographs, dinosaur
tracks and dig sites, old forts, Mexican missions, and Indian massacre and
ceremonial sites are scattered throughout Southern Colorado and will leave
lasting impressions on the mind years after visiting.
Elk and deer seasons draw
thousands of big game hunters every year. Other big game includes big horn
sheep, bear, mountain lion, and moose. The lower elevations have an
abundance of small game, waterfowl, and upland game birds.
