SOUTHERN COLORADO ECONOMIC
DEVELOPMENT DISTRICT

Otero County

Relax and enjoy the quiet charm and traditions of Otero County. A hidden treasure in Southeastern Colorado, it has begun to experience a new sense of growth and development. The old and the new have blended to form a "new community", one filled with the respect for the past and access to the future.

Historically, Otero County has served as the trade hub of the region. In 1833, William and Charles Bent, along with Ceran St. Vrain, constructed a trading post on the Santa Fe Trail. Today, Bent's Old Fort (the reconstruction now resides under the auspices of the National Park Service) provides an exciting look into history. The construction of the railroad also impacted Otero County, as "train towns" became established throughout the region. The pioneers of yesterday recognized the location and importance of Otero County as a trade center, and the same outlook remains today as it continues to be the trade hub for Southeastern Colorado.

Today, Otero County abounds with a myriad of cultural and recreational opportunities. Visitors to Vogel and Picketwire Canyon have the unique opportunity of viewing dinosaur tracks and primitive rock paintings. The canyon lands provide pioneers a sanctuary in the midst of the cast Great Plains, and a sun setting over the mesa, is an experience that everyone should experience.

Colorado is in the grasp of a great economy and huge population upswing. Otero County has long been agriculturally based, and while this segment continues to suffer, its importance to our area is second to none. Urban demand for agricultural water now threatens the rural lifestyle that we have cherished over the years. World-renowned as the "Home of the Rocky Mountain Cantaloupe", many efforts are being made to maintain our area's rich agricultural heritage. A subtle shift and diversification of our economic base, has resulted in a strong economy and bright outlook. Local economic development efforts focus on business and industries that want the "small town flavor" without the negative aspects of urban sprawl. Telecommunications and light industry have been welcome additions to our local economy, and their stability and employment needs offer our children opportunities that were not available a few years ago.

Otero Junior College is located in La Junta. It provides a wide range of educational opportunities for traditional and non-traditional students. An advanced Cisco Networking certification program explores the cutting edge of technology and demonstrates the commitment of the college in providing career oriented education.

Recently, an extensive fiber optic network was installed throughout the region. Access to this fiber optic network will enable our residents to enjoy the 21st Century technology. The potential for economic development is untapped. Businesses will be able to enjoy the comforts of rural Colorado as they compete in continental and intercontinental trade markets. The future is just beginning.
