Las Animas County
Stretching east form the jagged peaks of the fabled Sangre de Cristo
mountain range, over and across the foothills alive with the fragrance of
the juniper and pinon trees, extending into the continuous high plains is
a pocket of peace, plentiful clean air and pure Western Americana: Las
Animas County, Colorado.
At the southern most edge of Colorado, Las Animas County us separated
from New Mexico by rugged mesas through which the historic Santa Fe Trail
crossed. Carving its path through the center of the county is the
Purgatoire River, Through the ages, the Picketwire, as the river is
sometimes called, has created a spectacular canyon known simply as Red
Rocks.
Visitors and residents of Las Animas County enjoy as gentle a climate
as four full seasons can offer; temperate winters for golf and biking,
soft spring days for camping and hikes, warm summers ideal for fishing and
water sports and crisp blue skies with pristine clouds that oversee all
the autumn brilliance of the oak brush and aspen groves.
Tucked away in the protective folds of Fisher's Peak is the county's
commercial, governmental and social center - Trinidad. With a population
of just around 9,000, the town is still delightfully sophisticated and
culturally diverse. Trinidad offers its visitors and residents a junior
college, four museums (history, art, children's and archeology), a full
slate of civic and cultural organizations, a downtown that's a National
Historic District, a growing artist's community and several e-commerce
businesses.
The pace is relaxed. There's time to stop, to talk, to inquire and to
be interested. Newcomers and visitors are genuinely welcomed. So come
visit with us here in Las Animas County and Trinidad.
