Kiowa County
Kiowa County is located on the eastern edge of Colorado. The County has
several thousand acres of warm-water lakes that offer excellent
recreational opportunity. Excellent hunting is found throughout the
County.
The Great Plains Reservoirs are located nine miles south of Eads on
Highway 287. The largest reservoirs consist of four lakes bearing Cheyenne
Indian names. Nee Gronda (Big Water), Neesopah (Black Water), Neeskah
(Queen) and Neenoshe (Standing Water) are the four lakes. Queens State
Wildlife Area, also known as North and South Reservoirs, is also located
near Eads. Adobe Creek Reservoir, or Blue Lake, is 11 miles south of
Haswell. All of these lakes have perfect places for camping, picnicking,
sail boating, windsurfing and many other recreational activities.
Kiowa County is an outstanding place for hunting and wildlife watching.
Antelope, deer, ducks and geese are found on the plains, near the lakes.
In November, during the annual Mixed Bag Hunt, guides help teams bag
goose, duck, ring-necked pheasant and bobwhite quail. Wildlife watchers
can see and photograph antelope, deer, elk, the piping plover, least tern,
hawks and eagles.
The lakes of Kiowa County are regularly stocked by the Colorado
Division of Wildlife. This provides bass, bullhead, channel catfish, carp,
walleye and hybrid wiper for excellent fishing. Bass and walleye fishing
tournaments are held annually at Neegronda and Neenoshe Reservoirs.
Other attractions include the Eads Museum, Sand Creek Massacre Site,
Town of Haswell and Woelk Park and Museum.
