Custer County
Custer County may be the
state's most beautiful unspoiled mountain valley.
Nestled between the Wet Mountains to the east and the jagged peaks of
the Sangre de Cristo Range to the west, lie the scenic towns of
Westcliffe, Silver Cliff, Rosita and Wetmore. Protected by the
mountains, the "off the beaten path" valley is a peaceful
hideaway for residents and a glorious getaway for the thousands of
visitors who are lucky enough to discover this well-kept secret.
Surrounded by the San Isabel National Forest, the area is a year-round
playground for fishermen, horseback riders, cross-country skiers, hikers
and climbers.
Cattle ranching and hay farming are the backbone of the community. The
majestic peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains provide a panoramic
backdrop to the peaceful scenes of livestock grazing in lush green
pastures.
Today the towns of
Westcliffe,
the original railroad center for the valley, and
Silver
Cliff, the dominant mining town during the silver boom days, are the
center of the business community. Unlike most towns whose downtown area
is deserted, downtown Westcliffe is alive with people year-round.
